Get to know your fellow local parents who are regulars at The Village and learn more about how our services have helped them.

This time meet Shineade., who loves having us on her doorstep.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Shineade, living in Catford with my partner and our daughter – a lockdown baby. We’ve lived here for 4 years and were new to the area. I am an account manager in the city but got to work from home a lot even prior to Covid.

Before you joined us at The Village, how was your experience of early parenthood? How were you feeling?

I had my daughter in October 2020 and though not at the height of lockdown it was lonely. No baby shower (don’t think I’d have had one anyway), outdooring (West African tradition of introducing your baby to family and friends) or visitors. My partner didn’t get paternity straight away so I was alone a lot. Luckily I did NCT and this was a lifeline. Though it was all virtual, our group met for walks and our WhatsApp conversations kept me sane.

How did you find out about The Village?

I found out on social media as I was on the local Facebook groups. It was very close to me and I liked that it didn’t require you to book for weeks in advance and that it was inclusive in its pricing.

What was the first class/group/service you came for? How was that experience?

Family Music. It was great: a real mix of mothers and children of various ages. Margaret engages with the children so well.

What other services/classes/groups have you used/been to?

The new playgroup in the morning. In its infancy but I loved my first session and hope to see more new faces.

What difference has The Village made to your feelings and experience of being a parent?

It has allowed me to feel more confident in my parenting. Seeing other mothers at various stages of parenting, navigating this new journey. It has also allowed me to feel less isolated in the community as it’s a weekly space where you get to see regular faces.

Have you made friends at The Village?

Yes definitely to varying degrees. Funny as a a parent I seem to remember the children’s names more than the parents!

What would you say to local parents who are thinking of coming to The Village?

Do it. You can engage or observe to what ever degree you feel comfortable with. Your child will get some great interaction with other children and you will get to know more parents within the wider community.

Any other thoughts to share?

I’m looking forward to The Village growing and giving more ways for parents and the wider community to engage. What I like most is that you can share your feedback and suggestions and feel heard so you do feel like you are part of a village in huge city like London.
